Biodiversity – a Journal of Life on Earth is looking for a Book Review Editor!

We are looking for a skilled writer who is active in biodiversity research and/or has an interest in the field with high levels of English competency and a flair for language. The reviewer will be required to read two books and/or publications every three months on a biodiversity-related topic and write a 300-350 word review encompassing it. Reviews can be written by other reviewers, those with perhaps more expertise in the subject matter of specific books, as long as the reviews are not copyrighted elsewhere. The Book Review Editor will be responsible for coordinating those reviews. We invite applicants to provide us with a short bio, areas of interest and professional background to Biodiversity’s Managing Editor Vanessa Reid at: reidva@biodiversityconservancy.org. Please send us some sample reviews of previous book, publication and/or literature reviews.

This is currently a voluntary position and is an opportunity for the successful applicant to stay abreast of current publications in the field of biodiversity as well as receiving printed or electronic book samples offered for review by publishers. This role involves all elements of managing Wiltshire’s National Nature Reserves. The successful candidate will be part of Natural England’s Somerset, Avon & Wiltshire area team but will work predominantly in Wiltshire alongside the existing Senior Reserves Manager.

To attend this course you will need to hold a professional qualification and/or at least 2 years’ experience in one or more of the following:
• landscape design
• landscape architecture
• garden design

Accreditation in Transforming Learning:

This accreditation is for education professionals who want to support and encourage whole school communities to improve their knowledge, skills and confidence in the use of outdoor spaces for learning and play. To attend this course you will need to hold a professional qualification and/or at least 2 years’ experience of working with schools to support improvements in educational practice or play provision.

We’re seeking a Campaigner to join our Campaigning team, which operates as the window to the Trust’s Conservation and External Affairs work to unite supporters and communities and empower them to make a positive difference for woods and trees.

As an experienced campaigner on environmental issues you will identify threats to UK ancient woodland as they arise and work with colleagues on campaign development, planning and co-ordination of delivery, including public inquiry work and final evaluation. In addition you will be able to apply knowledge to analysis and research of detailed documents, be competent at uniting teams from across an organisation to respond to planning cases and be skilled at directing and inspiring volunteers and the public alike to deliver on behalf of the Trust.

You will also support the UK-wide volunteer network ‘ThreatDetectors’ as they respond to localised woodland threats, develop high-level partnerships to support our case work and wider ambitions for ancient woodland, integrate and support community groups as part of ancient woodland campaigns/cases and represent the Trust on panels and as part of coalitions relevant to ancient woodland.

Ideally, you will have an understanding of and practical knowledge of all four UK countries current town planning laws – including public inquiry processes together with practical experience of campaigning with a proven track record of success. You will have knowledge of environmental sector ideally with an understanding of ancient woodland. This role will require regular travel throughout the UK, sometimes at short notice which include overnight stays.

The Argyll Fisheries Trust is seeking to employ a Rivers and Fisheries Officer to meet its objectives towards the sustainability of wild freshwater fish and their habitats in Argyll.

Based at the AFT office at Inveraray, the person will be part of a team developing programmes to restore and support wild fish populations underpinned by monitoring and research. An understanding of the issues surrounding wild salmon and sea trout is essential, and a familiarity of aquaculture and forestry practices would be an advantage.

AFT is looking for an individual with a degree in a scientific or environmental discipline who has practical experience working in the field. The successful candidate for the post will be enthusiastic, aspires to develop, is self motivated, and able to work well within a team.

Ideally the applicant should also be qualified to SFCC team leader standards in electro fishing. A full driving licence and familiarity with GIS mapping is essential.
