Can you help University of Bristol students create a world class student life for themselves?

The University of Bristol Students’ Union (UBU) is a membership organisation democratically led by students, supported by a team of staff who run the day to day activities and services provided by the organisation. Ensuring that we create opportunities for students to improve their educational and wider university experience is at the core of the organisation’s purpose.

We are seeking a highly organised individual to take on the day-to-day management of UBU’s three sport and healthy activity programmes aimed at increasing levels of participation in sport. The person will also be a champion for equality, diversity and inclusivity (EDI), and ensure EDI is embedded into UBU’s work, particularly in relation to student activities.

Lecturer in Historical and Cultural Geography

University of Bristol

University of Bristol – School of Geographical Sciences

Location: Bristol
Salary: £35,256 to £45,954
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed on: 14th November 2014
Closes: 14th December 2014
Job Ref: ACAD101144

The School of Geographical Sciences seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Historical and Cultural Geography.

The Historical and Cultural Geography research group is a world-leading centre for research in theoretically informed human geography with particular interests in social theory, continental philosophy, affect, embodiment, performance and curation. We are also a major hub for research into the historical geography of various types of knowledge: the emergence of modern temporal consciousness, the geographies of the Holocaust, and the history of geographical and environmental ideas.

Particular preference may be given to historical geographers whose interests intersect with environmental history and the environmental humanities more generally, but research quality regardless of field is our paramount concern.

Our vision is that the successful applicant will be able to create interdisciplinary agendas with scholars in Bristol’s Cabot Institute and with a range of scholars in the humanities and social sciences engaged in the study of the environment.

5 prestigious Wellcome Trust-funded Research Fellow positions are available. Fellows will work as a cohort in an exciting multidisciplinary research environment, where they will have the opportunity to work across disciplines, learning new skills and experience immersive training mentored by experts. Posts are available for 36 months from 1st April 2015 and will be suitable for early-career researchers whose expertise spans one or more of the following areas: spatio-temporal modelling, complex networks, algorithm design and parallel architectures, data analytics and visualisation, optical microscopy and image analysis, high throughput –omics, causal modelling of observational data and uncertainty quantification. Candidates, whilst required to have a high level of analytical ability, must be able to communicate complex and conceptual ideas to a range of groups, including scientists from outside the immediate research area and participate as part of an interdisciplinary team to develop new research ideas. Individuals who successfully secure external Fellowship funding during their appointment will be further offered a proleptic appointment (e.g. permanent position commencing at the end of the external Fellowship) within a College closely aligned to their core research interests.

The Centre for Biomedical Modelling and Analysis will be led by a core group of leading interdisciplinary biomedical academics from across three science colleges to develop fundamental new methodologies and capabilities that integrate techniques from computer science, mathematics, physics and statistics, as well as enabling their subsequent application into the biomedical and clinical domain. We are committed to fostering a dynamic research-led environment, peopled by high quality staff and wish to invest in, and support high calibre scientists.

The roles have two main components with the Fellows expected to divide their time equally between the two: First they will pursue their own programme of research (which should be in an area closely aligned to existing strengths within the University). Second they will develop new areas of cross-disciplinary research within the Centre for Biomedical Modelling and Analysis. This will include pump priming, co-creating and consolidating both new and existing research partnerships; training and advising biomedical researchers in areas aligned to their core expertise; and mentoring of students, thus enhancing the interdisciplinary research ethos within the University. This will include the opportunity to co-supervise a cohort of PhD students who will be recruited during 2016.

For further information, please contact Dr Charlotte Moger on 01392 726493 or c.j.m@exeter.ac.uk or Professor John Terry on 01392 725274 or j.terry@exeter.ac.uk.

Please include with your application an expression of interest which should include a two-page summary of the research you propose to undertake as part of your Fellowship, alongside your CV. This should be uploaded through our online application system and is required for full consideration of your application.

The College is working towards department Silver Athena SWAN awards as a commitment to providing equality of opportunity and advancing the representation of women in STEM/M subjects: science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine.
