Community Fungus Survey Leader

Community Fungus Survey Leader

Fixed-term contract until 30 June 2017 (with the possibility of a two-year extension subject to funding)

Kew is the world-leader in plant diversity science, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a major visitor attraction, that shows the importance of plants in all our lives. Kew’s mission is to inspire and deliver science-based plant conservation worldwide, enhancing the quality of life.

The Lost & Found Fungi project will survey a selection of species in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, with restricted historical distributions. The intention will be to establish whether they (or at least their spore-bearing structures) are genuinely rare or only apparently so, due to lack of recording effort in the past. They will include species that have not (or rarely) been found during the past 50 years, newly discovered species that may be recent immigrants or historically overlooked, species that are the subject of conservation management and action plans, and those of particular interest on a local scale. The selected fungi will constitute a rolling list of species of potential conservation concern. Those that cannot be re-found will be considered as potentially nationally extinct, and those found to be substantially more common or widespread than previously thought, will be removed from the list and replaced with other candidates. Conservation assessments will be made for each species and, where appropriate, management plans will be developed in liaison with landowners, managers and other stakeholders.

As the Project Officer, you will be the main public face for the Lost & Found Fungi programme. You will focus on liaisons with the volunteer recorders and other stakeholder groups, ensuring that they all understand the project objectives, have the available information on target species in accessible formats, carry out surveys in the most effective way, and liaise with landowners/managers to promote species protection. Your job will involve a significant travel element, meeting volunteer groups, providing training, and carrying out surveys both independently and alongside the volunteers.

A key attribute will be a persuasive yet diplomatic nature, inspiring and encouraging volunteers to give up their time for the project. To do this, an exchange of benefits will be needed, with the groups receiving support in the form of information, training, confirmation of identifications, and feedback on project progress. You will be a competent field mycologist with a good understanding of the taxonomic principles that underpin species definition and identification. You will be part of an expert team of mycologists including specialists in systematics, phylogeny, ecology and conservation.

Application packs are available from our website, by following the ‘More information’ link below.

Alternatively, please contact the HR Department, RBG Kew, on 020 8332 3135. Please quote Ref 8087.

Closing date: Sunday, 16 November 2014.

We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from all sections of the community. We guarantee to interview all disabled applicants who meet the essential criteria for the post.
