Just a few steps away from our everyday lives, waterways give us a much-needed space where we can escape. Next to our canals and rivers we can relax and reconnect with ourselves, our environment and the people who matter to us. Our waterway network is a national treasure and the Canal & River Trust is here to ensure that it is protected forever. Our mission is to inspire as many people as possible to connect with our canals and rivers. We believe that the true potential of our canals and rivers and their long-term survival will only be secured if we fully engage with our visitors, neighbours and business partners. By harnessing their goodwill, energy and expertise, we can widen the enjoyment of our waterways today while protecting them for future generations. The canals and rivers that we look after offer you an authentic, unfenced, ‘no turnstiles’ opportunity to interact with history, wildlife and nature first-hand. It’s a very big job looking after them. On top of maintaining 2,000 miles of canals and rivers, which are often over 200 years old, we are responsible for an enormous network of bridges, embankments, towpaths, aqueducts, docks and reservoirs alongside everything else that makes up our wonderful waterways. This takes a huge amount of effort behind the scenes. From improving towpaths for cyclists and walkers, encouraging biodiversity by installing bat boxes and insect piles to maintaining our locks, bridges and aqueducts, we are constantly working to make our canals and rivers the best they can be.

Environmental Technology Development Lead

Seeking a project manager to co-ordinate and deliver EU grant funded programmes, focussed on low carbon technology.

Job purpose

The Centre for Carbon Measurement is based at the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington, South West London. It was launched with ministerial support in March 2012. The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is one of the UK`s leading science and technology centres. It is a world-leading centre of excellence in developing and applying the most accurate standards, science and technology available.

NPL occupies a unique position as the UK`s National Measurement Institute and sits at the intersection between scientific discovery and real world application. Its expertise and original research have underpinned quality of life, innovation and competitiveness for UK citizens and business for more than a century.

The Centre for Carbon Measurement brings measurement science to the challenging issue of understanding climate change and developing technologies to mitigate it. The lab delivers £8m of projects in climate change and low carbon technologies each year, to answer questions like:

- How can we improve the accuracy of climate data in order to better predict the extent and impact of climate change?

- How can we provide confidence in greenhouse gas emission measurements of industrial sites and agriculture?

- How can we demonstrate the carbon savings from projects or policies?

- What can we do to validate the claims of new technology – such as how efficient it may be – to give investors and customers confidence?

- What will the impact of low carbon technologies be on our existing infrastructure and how will it need to change to accommodate them?

The Centre is part-government funded, part-commercially funded, and covers the work of up to 150 scientists across the science and technology lab in which it is based.

Key duties

The Centre is expanding its work and requires additional central resource to support its growth. Tasks will include:

  • Management and co-ordination of activities on a large EU funded project to validate the performance of novel and emerging environmental technologies:
  • Handling initial enquiries from SMEs, understanding technical requirements, validating eligibility for verification
  • Management and co-ordination of verification process, including final reports and issue of verification certificate
  • Day-to-day interaction and communication with official bodies e.g. EU commission, UKAS, Defra, other verification bodies, internal and external technical teams and potential SME funding bodies
  • Scoping potential projects for the Centre, alongside scientists and technical experts from inside and outside NPL.
  • Supporting scientists to expand their work in key areas, for example by completing research on additional funding they could access, supporting the development of partnerships with external organisations and helping them to create strategic plans for their areas.
  • Preparing engaging reports and communications materials on a range of projects and themes, to promote the work of the Centre to stakeholders.
  • Informing the strategy for the Centre, by analysing internal and external data, attending conferences, events and meetings, and engaging with people internal and external to NPL.

Key skills and experience required

  • Has initiative and an ability to prioritise their own workload and escalate appropriately;
  • Is able to complete quantitative and qualitative research and analysis;
  • Has an ability to work with technical experts and communicate their work to others in simple terms;
  • Has a good level of written English with an ability to communicate effectively to both technical and non-technical people; and
  • Preferably has a background in science and experience or knowledge of the low carbon sector.
  • Familiarity with EU and other institutional grant funded projects would be advantageous.

The role represents an opportunity to:

  • Progress the development of a successful and growing unit at NPL, as part of a dynamic team;
  • Learn about a range of low carbon technologies and solutions across a wide range of scientific areas;
  • Work on a diverse range of tasks, getting involved in defining science projects, market research, strategic planning, and communications; and
  • Work for a high profile Centre, liaising with partners in government, academia and business.

We offer competitive salaries, a wealth of career opportunities and a wide range of benefits.
