Senior Scientific Manager

We are looking for a highly capable Senior Scientific Manager with significant experience in an operational management role. The successful candidate will join our DNA Pipeline operations, delivering scientific services to internal customers.

This role will be wholly responsible for all aspects of managing a specific multi-disciplinary team of between 15-20 staff. The post holder will be expected to coordinate, manage and shape the operation of current and future DNA Pipelines. You will foster a culture of tight portfolio and project management to ensure the delivery of high quality DNA based data in a timely manner under rigorous financial control. The team itself can process up to 6,000 samples per month presenting a busy and challenging environment for the post holder.

Managing day to day delivery to customers including taking the lead on evaluating the pipeline operations and implementing changes to processes and structure to maximise efficiency and effectiveness will be a key focus of this role. Initially responsible for a specific team, the role is expected to rotate across the whole of DNA Pipelines.

The Sanger Institute is one of the world’s leading medical research centres funded primarily by the Wellcome Trust. It has built on its success with the major sequencing projects- human, zebrafish, mouse, pig- to now look at the role of genetics in health and disease.

You should have experience of working in a busy office environment, experience of managing teams and working under pressure to demanding deadlines. Ideally you will also have experience of working on large projects and systems development.

A detailed knowledge of the Cambridge English product range and the examination production cycle is desirable.

About the job

The Smuts Management Committee invites applications for a non-renewable Smuts Visiting Research Fellowship in Commonwealth Studies, tenable for 9 months commencing 1st October 2015.

The successful applicant will be expected to pursue research in the field of Commonwealth Studies, including Commonwealth related aspects of archaeology, anthropology, economics, history, human geography, law, literature, oriental studies, sociology, politics and social psychology. The Fellow is expected to advance Commonwealth Studies in Cambridge principally by pursuing research, as well as by taking part in seminars and equivalent activities within the University.

The Managers expect that the person appointed would be intending to come to Cambridge to work on a project that builds on existing research for which a period of residence in Cambridge is demonstrably appropriate, although they would not rule out a new piece of work that is expected to be completed by the end of the 9 month tenure of the Fellowship.

Candidates should be members of staff of a University, or similar institution, outside of the UK.  The person appointed will be expected to have obtained a PhD (or equivalent) or be working at post-doctoral level with established or emerging international reuptations.

Join the Ranger team on the spectacualr North Cornwall coast to learn and develop the skills needed for a career in conservation. You will work with the ranger team to gain experience in all aspects of countryside management such as repairing footpaths, leading volunteer groups, habitat management, walling, assisting with events and school groups, working with local farmers, and monitoring wildlife.

We will provide you with free accommodation, for which a small contribution to electric and phone bills is required. You will get in-house training, as well as some external training such as Brushcutter and first aid. NPTC diploma in work based Environmental Conservation is also available.

Requirements

We ask for a minimum of 6 months commitment, with most volunteers spending between 6-12 months here gaining experience. Candidates must be of a practical nature, who are physically fit and willing to work outdoors in all weathers. The role would suit someone who enjoys engaging with others and who would like experience of leading practical volunteer and education groups. An Interest and/or qualification in relevant environmental subject such as: countryside management, nature conservation, environmental science would be useful. A full clean driving licence is essential, driver must be over 21 and have been driving for at least 1 year.

Sustainability Consultant

We are a Sustainable Design Consultancy working in construction. We specialise in giving advice to Architects, homeowners and Developers on how to design and build low energy and sustainable housing. Most projects are high spec in Central London and all are domestic.

Job Purpose: BREEAM Assessor and Consultant using Code for Sustainable Homes, BREEAM Domestic Refurbishment and EcoHomes.

Main Requirement: You will preferably be a trained and registered assessor for at least one and preferably all three of EcoHomes, the Code for Sustainable Homes and BREEAM Domestic Refurbishment.

Work Time: This is a full-time position in our company, five days a week. We enable flexitime for mutual benefit.

Main Role: Initially you will need to be trained to understand the way we do things, but very quickly you will be expected to take responsibility for all stages of project assessments for CSH, EcoHomes and BDR – from Preliminary Team Meeting to Final Site Visit – and including all reporting, Client updating, information collation and Project Team liaison.

The water stewardship team within WWF-UK are developing new work areas within the Ganges river basin. We need to ensure our advocacy stems from a robust and evidence-based understanding of the hydrology of the river basin and the ecosystem services that stem from it. In order to do this we need to understand what are the key pieces of hydrological modelling work that have already been carried out on the Ganges, and assess their usefulness for supporting WWF’s work on environmental flows and water stewardship. In particular, we are interested in integrating modelling work within methods for assessing trade-offs in delivery of ecosystem services (e.g. pareto-efficiency approaches) in order to build support for implementing environmental flows, improved water allocation policies, and field-scale interventions in agriculture that deliver benefits to rivers.

The water stewardship team sit within the Food & Freshwater team, which is part of WWF’s Corporate Stewardship Unit.

What’s the purpose of this role?

This role will support our project development by providing the following outputs:

  • A review of the key existing hydrological modelling initiatives for the Ganges river basin.
  • Identification of the most appropriate hydrological models for supporting the development and implementation of WWF’s policy positions. In particular models that represent the key system attributes for which trade-offs exist when implementing environmental flows, and important processes in agricultural water use and water saving technologies (e.g. rainwater harvesting).
  • Identification of the most appropriate methods for WWF to assess trade-offs under different water management strategies.

What skills, Knowledge and Experience are needed?

  • An excellent understanding and background in hydrology is essential.
  • Experience in hydrological and water resource modelling with a range of model types is essential.
  • A good understanding of pareto-efficiency approaches is essential.
  • Understanding of techniques for assessing trade-offs associated with implementation of environmental flows, including environmental, economic and social is desirable.
  • Understanding of water accounting and water balance calculations is desirable.
  • Understanding of how to achieve equitable and efficient water allocations is desirable
  • Good communication skills are desirable

This is a 13 week internship, paid at minimum wage.

Environmental Scientist – Ecology and Remediation

Rural Arisings Limited, formed in 2002, is a firm of engineers specialising in the recovery and reuse of wastes such as construction and demolition arisings to create environmental enhancements on complex projects. Our primary area of work is the creation of new parks and recreational facilities on closed landfill sites and other contaminated sites. We also undertake projects dealing with liquid storage and management including animal waste slurries, dairy waste waters, dirty surface water runoff and irrigation lakes. We take projects from inception, through feasibility, design and construction.

Our clients have included both public and private sectors, examples include:-

- Swale Borough Council – Milton Creek Country Park , Sittingbourne
- Belhus Land – Belhus Country Park (Essex) – under construction
- Owner – Holmstead Farm – reed beds for the treatment of cattle slurry

We are seeking an environmental scientist/ecologist to work as part of a small team on the remediation of a contaminated site in Surrey. The successful applicant will work under the supervision of experienced engineers and ecologists.

Duties

1. Planning and creating habitats to include:

• Species monitoring, trapping and re-location of reptiles
• Clearing vegetation
• Ecological monitoring, reporting on site ecology in relation to progress of phases.
• Organising planting and seeding of phases as construction/ remediation progresses
• Carrying out field surveys to monitor changes in the environment
• Working with interested environmental groups

2. Day to day management of the construction process including:

• Liaison/supervision of contractor including earthworks, drainage and hydrology
• management of contamination and process treatment plant.

3. Community liaison as the project develops

4. Assist on designing schemes for new agricultural and country park sites; preparing drawings and documents for planning permission.

Skills Required

Recycling Promoters will engage with residents and motivate them to recycle through direct interaction on their doorstep.

The roles involve face to face interaction with residents on the doorstep, raising awareness of the recycling services and encouraging residents to participate.

These positions provide an excellent opportunity for those looking to gain experience in the waste and recycling sector. Attention to detail, enthusiasm and fantastic communication skills are essential.
