FoodSave Volunteer

FoodSave volunteer
Want to help in the fight against food waste? The food and farming charity Sustain is looking for an intern to work on its FoodSave project.

About the project
FoodSave offers free support to London’s small and medium-sized food businesses to help them reduce food waste, divert surplus food to good purposes and recycle any unavoidable food waste. For more information see www.sustainweb.org/foodsave.

An outline of the volunteer role
The main task of the volunteer will be to:
• Recruit new retail, wholesale and manufacturing businesses to FoodSave, by telephone, email and in person.
• Identify outlets for surplus food, such as charities feeding disadvantaged people
• Research food waste recycling schemes
• Write up case studies of businesses that have successfully tackled food waste
• Spread the word about the project through social media, particularly Twitter
• Support tasks and activities in measuring food waste data
• Help with general administrative tasks

We’re looking for someone able to start by the end of September and commit to volunteering for two or more days a week for at least three months. The position is based at Sustain’s office close to Old Street station in central London.

Desirable skills, interests and experience
As the volunteer’s role will involve spending much of the time making telephone calls, you must be happy talking on the phone and be able to do so with confidence and clarity.

We’re also hoping to find someone who has:
• An awareness of and interest in the food waste issue
• The ability to work independently
• Good writing and research skills with keen attention to detail
• Good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate and work with colleagues and food businesses
• Experience of working in a food business would be a bonus

To apply
If you’re interested in this opportunity, please visit www.sustainweb.org/foodsave and have a good look at the pages and sub-pages to get an idea of the project’s work. Then, write a brief (no more than 1 side of A4) covering letter, outlining:
• What you feel that you can bring to the project, including your relevant skills and experience
• What you hope to get out of volunteering with the project – it’s a two-way deal!
• For how many days per week and for how many months you will be available

Please email this and your current CV to zoe [at] sustainweb [dot] org with ‘FoodSave intern’ in the subject field.

Applications close at noon on Tuesday 14th October.

Please note that this is a voluntary position.

The successful applicant’s relationship with the charity Sustain will be as an unpaid volunteer and there is no intention of forming any employment relationship. If carrying out tasks in the Sustain office for five or more hours in a given day, we can reimburse up to £13 for a volunteer’s receipted out-of-pocket expenses for lunch and travel to/from the office.

We encourage applications from anyone with relevant skills and interests, but regret that we are unable to offer any payment or expenses beyond those outlined above; or assist with finding accommodation or with visa applications.
